Every year, I choose a word to try and embody every year. This year, simple speaks to me.
: not hard to understand or do
: having few parts : not complex or fancy
: not special or unusual
2014 was a challenging and complicated year for us. We took on a lot, we had several curve balls, dealt with health uncertainty, and experienced a lot of stress.
2014 was also an incredible year for us - we traveled to some amazing places, and learned that we are going to be parents in 2015. I definitely lived my 2014 word, explore.
The juxtaposition of the highs and lows this past year were amazing, but hard at the same time. So for this year, I'm yearning for a more stable life.
And I'm striving to find that through simple living and getting back to the basics.
I spend a lot of time online and on my phone. Dealing with all my email that totals to hundreds a day, social networks, professional networks, apps, taking photos, etc. Sometimes I find myself upset that I feel I can't get through it all - or that I'm going to miss out on something (the kids these days are calling this FOMO - fear of missing out).
But it turns out, that if you remove or decrease that time, you have more time for LIFE. Experiencing life. Making friends at the grocery store checkout line. Smiling at a stranger. Talking with your loved one. Playing with your dog. Walking outside.
So, I plan to unsubscribe to emails. Limit time on social networks. Reduce expectations and FOMO. Clear stuff and clutter. Live life for me, and not for anyone else to judge, comment, or compare.
I want to live a simple life: thoughtfully, with purpose, and with a calm and peace that has eluded me for a couple of years. Meet more friends for lunch or coffee. Meet new friends and make new connections. Spend quality time with the ones that we love. Genuinely be grateful for our life that we have instead of wanting or trying to achieve that next level.
In June, we will bring a little one into the world. It will completely change our lives, and I cannot wait (well, I can wait - I will thoroughly enjoy my last 5 months of quiet time, don't you worry). But with this baby will come lots of change, new emotions, little sleep, and a lot of love. I can't think of a better time to live a simple life and get back to the basics.
